EDIT [some thirty minutes later]: Alistair!PC has graduatedfrom the shittiness of a bad bout with Windows and the Interwebs to the rock-solid security of Ubuntu. I was going to do it eventually, but fate's forced my hand. At least the laptop is more than okay, and that means that all my files are fine too. Generally. ...Sort of.
